Julie Chen Moonves came in hot, and Rick Devens is the target. The Big Brother host delivered one of the most brutal player takedowns in recent memory — complete with a threat to “snuff out his flame” — while simultaneously crowning Dee as the early frontrunner and calling Angela Murray “television gold.”
The Crossover Dream Is Falling Apart
They came into the house late. Two of them had been rivals on their previous reality TV season, and they’d never met the third. Yet Dee Valladares, Rick Devens, and Angela Murray became thick as thieves in their first week inside the Big Brother 28 house — a trio of reality TV icons forming one of the season’s most anticipated alliances.
The problem? Host Julie Chen Moonves is watching closely, and she’s not impressed with at least one of them.
“I’m surprised how little Rick Devens gets this game,” the Chenbot said bluntly. “And how much Dee gets it and got it right away.”
“This Ain’t Survivor, Honey”
Julie had heard all the Devens hype leading into the season — especially after his legendary Survivor 50 run where he hid a fake idol at Tribal Council and pulled off some of the most chaotic moves in the show’s history. She was a fan. That changed fast.
“I know people love Devens, and he was great at Survivor. This ain’t Survivor, honey. This here Big Brother.”
The moment that pushed Julie over the edge was Rick casually revealing to Angela and Drew that he and Dee were in a secret alliance called the “Red Corner” — an alliance they didn’t plan to stay loyal to. The risk: if that information got back to actual Red Corner members Chuck, Haley, and Kamu, the entire group’s position could implode.
Dee’s reaction when Rick told her what he’d done said everything. “You did what?!” The look on her face became the moment Julie couldn’t unsee.
“I was like, ‘Go back to the island, dude! I’m gonna snuff out your flame,'” Julie said. “Oh, it was terrible.”
The Loose Lips Problem
Julie had initially been rooting for Rick because of their shared background in morning news broadcasting. She’s a former CBS Early Show anchor; he’s a former TV journalist. But any goodwill from that connection evaporated the moment he started talking too much inside the house.
“I’m like: Okay, I was rooting for you in the beginning because you’re a former morning news anchor, as was I. But then with his loose lips, he quickly lost me.”
It’s a pointed lesson in what separates Survivor from Big Brother. In Survivor, bold moves and dramatic reveals can make you a legend. In Big Brother, that same behavior gets you nominated and sent packing.
Dee Is Her Favorite — and Angela Is “Television Gold”
While Rick has fallen hard in Julie’s estimation, Dee has risen just as fast. “You know, I was kind of against two former Survivors coming in, and now I find myself pulling for Dee. Because she gets it.”
Angela Murray, meanwhile, earns nothing but love from the host. “I love Angela Murray. Television gold.” Angela has played a much calmer game so far compared to her chaotic Big Brother 26 debut — but Julie thinks the real test will come if she wins Head of Household.
Julie’s Early Money
When asked who she’s backing to win, Julie spread her bets — but was characteristically direct about it.
“I have $5 on Drew. I have $5 on LaTrice. And I like them.” As for Rick? “That could change next week. Like I was pulling for Rick Devens, and then with his loose lips, he lost my support. So, I’m a fair-weather fan [of players], as well as the host of the show.”
Rick Devens arrived as one of the most hyped houseguests in recent Big Brother history. He has plenty of time to turn it around. But with Julie Chen Moonves already threatening to snuff out his flame, the pressure is on — and the island is not an option anymore.
