The Stockport-born star had already surprised fans with a striking physical transformation earlier this year, but he has now revealed that the biggest change was happening much deeper. According to Danny, the turning point came after a frightening rock-bottom moment — and thanks to the intervention of one trusted co-star who stepped in at exactly the right time.

The Thursday Night That Changed Everything
During a candid conversation on his podcast You Don’t Know You’re Born!, which he co-hosts with Nigel “Wingman” Clucas, Danny described the exact moment he knew something had to change.
He explained that his drinking had reached a dangerous point on a Thursday night, leaving him feeling so overwhelmed that he believed “everything was going to be over” for him. The next morning, still shaken and desperate, he went into work and ended up alone in a dressing room with Isabel Hodgins, who plays Victoria Sugden in the ITV soap.
“Isabel was actually the inspiration… I’m going to say this quickly or I’ll cry!” Danny said emotionally on the show. “I can remember, to the day, when it was. The last day I had a drink was a Thursday night, when I thought everything was going to be over for me. On the Friday morning, I was with Isabel and I asked her, ‘How do I stop drinking?’ And she was amazing with me. She was the inspiration behind it.”
A Small Gesture That Meant Everything
Isabel’s support went far beyond kind words. In the middle of Emmerdale‘s busy production schedule, she became a steady point of accountability for Danny, even giving him sobriety chips to recognise both his six-month and one-year milestones.
In one especially emotional backstage moment, Isabel even gave him her own one-year token as a sign of support and encouragement.
“She brought in her very own year token to say well done to me, and she was a massive reason I’m still not drinking today,” Danny said, speaking directly to his co-star on air. “That’s why you’ll always be one of my best friends in the world, and I’ll always be thankful.”
Isabel responded warmly: “I’m glad I could help because the person you are now, I could not be more proud. So well done you!”
The touching exchange quickly sparked a wave of support from the Emmerdale family. Fellow cast member Eden Taylor-Draper reacted with a heart emoji on social media, while Danny also publicly thanked his wife, Steph, for standing beside him through his hardest days.
