Emmerdale’s Robert Faces Estranged Husband Kev Alone at Christening — and His Shocking Offer Leaves Fans Floored

Emmerdale’s big christening scenes see two characters absent

Aaron Dingle was nowhere in sight when Robert Sugden came face-to-face with his estranged husband Kev Townsend at baby Leyla’s christening — and what Kev said next is the last thing anyone expected. With a divorce offer on the table and mysterious newcomer Serena already circling the family, Robert’s road to marrying Aaron just got a whole lot more complicated.

Baby Leyla’s Christening — But Two Familiar Faces Were Missing

The whole village turned out for baby Leyla’s christening on Tuesday night — but eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice who wasn’t there. Two notable faces were absent from the church pews, and the show’s explanations for their absence opened up storylines nobody saw coming.

At the church, Cain and Lydia arrived as the sole Dingle representatives. Chas immediately clocked the thin turnout and asked where the rest of the family was. Cain’s answer was straightforward enough — Moira was at home with a sick Isaac. Sam eventually made it too, having been held up fixing a dodgy clay pigeon shooter. Crisis (temporarily) averted on that front.

Aaron Was a No-Show — and the Reason Is Bigger Than You Think

The second notable absence was Aaron Dingle. Robert and Aaron had only just returned from holiday, but Aaron was immediately pulled away on a scrap run — leaving Robert flying solo for what turned out to be one of the most loaded evenings in recent memory.

Fans already know the real reason Aaron isn’t on screen right now: actor Danny Miller has been away filming a new series of The Celebrity Apprentice for the past few weeks. The show worked around it neatly — but the timing of Aaron’s absence left Robert exposed in exactly the wrong moment.

Robert Comes Face-to-Face With Kev — Alone

Without Aaron by his side, Robert found himself face-to-face with Kev Townsend — his estranged husband, who returned to the village last week. It was the kind of encounter that could have gone several very bad ways.

Robert didn’t waste a second. He made it crystal clear to Kev: he’s engaged to Aaron now, and that’s where things stand. But Kev’s response wasn’t what Robert — or the audience — was braced for. Instead of drama, Kev offered an apology. For everything. And then he offered Robert something he’s been waiting for: a divorce.

What the Divorce Offer Really Means for Robert and Aaron

An insider close to the storyline put it best: “What a relief for Robert. Divorcing Kev means that he can officially close that chapter in his life and, once finalised, Robert is free to marry Aaron, which he so desperately wants to do.”

There’s also reassurance in how Kev is handling this. “It’s also a good sign that Kev has moved on and doesn’t have any plans to start harassing the pair of them again!” The offer feels genuine — but in Emmerdale, nothing is ever quite that clean.

Fans have been reacting online with a mix of relief and suspicion. Yes, the divorce offer is everything Robert needed to hear. But why now? Why is Kev suddenly being so cooperative? The village has a long memory for men who seem to have changed.

And Then There’s Serena

As if the Kev situation wasn’t enough, Robert also had his first proper encounter with Serena — a distant cousin who has recently arrived in the village with a mystery swirling around her. The two had a conversation at the farm, and Robert, taking things at face value for now, even invited her to stay a while so she could meet Aaron.

It’s a warm gesture. It’s also possibly a very naive one. Serena has already ruffled feathers elsewhere in the village, and her connection to the Sugden family feels like it’s only going to deepen — and complicate — things further.

Robert’s evening at the christening started with a half-empty Dingle pew. It ended with an estranged husband offering a divorce and a mysterious cousin in his kitchen. Emmerdale really doesn’t do quiet.
