‘Big Brother’ host Julie Chen Moonves wants to lean into the time-travel fashion
Julie Chen Moonves has already floated a request up the chain of command: if the season is Time Trip, she wants a mullet wig and shoulder pads — and she needs to know now so she can put in the order.

Big Brother’s Time Trip theme for Season 28 has already delivered some memorable moments: houseguests in mammoth fur, a Dining Table Time Machine that seems like a logistical nightmare, and Rachel Reilly’s prehistoric demise at the hands of a velociraptor. But there’s one person who has been watching all of this unfold from outside the time machine, and she is not happy about it.
The Pitch Julie Already Made
Julie Chen Moonves told Entertainment Weekly that she’s “floated it up the chain of command.” The idea: if the season’s theme is time travel, why shouldn’t the host dress accordingly? She’s already identified what she wants for the 1980s era specifically — and she’s already thought through the logistics.
“If you want me to wear a mullet wig, you have to let me know as soon as possible, because I have to put in the order,” she said. “Because I want it to look good. I want it to be funny, but I want it to look good!”
The Full ’80s Vision
“I am a child of the ’80s,” she said. “That’s when I started being allowed to wear makeup. So part of me wants big hair, maybe some red Sally Jessy Raphael glasses, shoulder pads, lots of lip gloss — you know, just ’80s it out!”
The shoulder pads alone would be a moment. Add the mullet and the Raphael glasses and you have what may be the best hosting look in the show’s history.
CBS May Not Be On Board
EPs Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan “may not agree,” Chen Moonves acknowledged. But she’s already suggested a workaround: even if the main show won’t go for it, she’s open to doing a mullet-wig moment for social media.
“Even if it’s just for silly social media,” she said. “But I love that. I think it’s so fun. You gotta laugh at yourself.”
Why It Would Work
Chen Moonves is genuinely funny when she leans into self-awareness, and the Big Brother fanbase rewards that energy. A host who’s willing to put on a period-accurate mullet to match the season’s theme isn’t just playing along — she’s making the show feel like a cohesive creative vision.
