Big Brother 28 Episode 23 Recap: Twist Turns the Game Into a Battle for Survival

There was no Head of Household, no Power of Veto and no Block Buster. Instead, Big Brother 28 threw the houseguests into an unprecedented fight for survival, with a series of competitions determining who would make it to jury — and who would have their game abruptly cut short. With no traditional nomination ceremony or veto meeting to hide behind, the players had nowhere to run as the power to save and eliminate shifted from one houseguest to another throughout the night.

Sunday night’s episode picks up immediately after Mallory’s eviction. Melody is still screaming, Barrett is crying, Dee is pretending to be conflicted about the mess she helped create, and Drew is desperately trying to do damage control with Melody. It isn’t going particularly well. He tells her he’s sorry, and she responds with a very direct, “No you aren’t.”

Barrett, meanwhile, lets us know that he’s officially not feeling great about the Icons, or Drew, anymore. He says he has definitely reached a crossroads, which is probably not the worst place to be considering how quickly this house is turning on itself.

And then it’s time for the Head of Household competition.

Or … apparently not.

The houseguests head to the backyard, where they find everything decked out in elaborate medieval decorations. Britney arrives to deliver a royal proclamation, and instead of announcing an HOH competition, she drops a bomb: the HOH competition has been canceled.

The King demands one of their heads.

That means that before the night is over, someone’s game will come to an end, and there will be no HOH, no Power of Veto and no Block Buster to protect them. Anyone can be eliminated.

Instead, the houseguests will compete in a series of contests for Safety Stones. The basic idea is that each round gives players opportunities to secure their own safety and, in some cases, protect someone else. But there’s a catch: the winners also get to determine who has to compete in subsequent rounds, meaning the power to survive, and the power to put someone else in danger, keeps shifting throughout the night.

Competition 1

Dee wins the first competition, guaranteeing herself safety for the night. She also gets to give a Safety Stone to another houseguest. And, naturally, she gives it to Devens.

Dee then has the power to hand out two Stones of Sacrifice, which determine who will compete in the next round. Britney explains the increasingly complicated rules, but the important part is that getting into the competition early can be a huge advantage because surviving these rounds is the only way to secure your spot in the jury.

Dee initially wants to give one of the Stones of Sacrifice to Angela, but Angela isn’t exactly in the right mental state to jump into another competition. Dee decides she wants to choose someone who will ultimately help protect Angela.

Haley, meanwhile, realizes that nobody is likely to volunteer to put her into the competition, so she asks to go first. Dee gives the Stones of Sacrifice to Drew and Haley. Barrett is not thrilled. He interprets Dee’s move as an attempt to push him out of the game and replace him with Haley, which does not exactly improve his already deteriorating relationship with Dee.

Competition 2: Drew vs. Haley

Cody shows up with a bad British accent to host this round. Drew and Haley face off, with the winner earning safety and gaining control over the next stage of the competition. Drew wins.

That means Haley remains vulnerable and has to continue competing. Drew also has to give one other houseguest a Safety Stone, while choosing someone else to compete against Haley. After a somewhat half-hearted debate over whether he should protect Melody, Drew ultimately gives Angela the Safety Stone.

Then he sends Barrett into the competition against Haley. So now it’s Barrett vs. Haley, with both of them fighting for their games.

Competition 3: Barrett vs. Haley

Tiffany takes over to host this round. And Barrett wins the competition. That gives him safety for the night and, more importantly, puts him in control of the next stage of the bloodbath. He now gets to select two houseguests to receive Stones of Sacrifice and compete in the next round.

The winner of that next contest will have an enormous amount of power: they will ultimately get to decide who is safe and who is eliminated.

And then…

Cliffhanger.

Barrett makes his selections. But we don’t find out who he picked. The episode ends before we get to see who receives the Stones of Sacrifice, meaning we have to wait until Wednesday night to see how it plays out.
