Three Big Brother houseguests who died after filming reality show – and how CBS honored the late contestants
FOR more than 25 years, hundreds of contestants have walked through the iconic doors of the Big Brother house, all chasing the chance to score the $750,000 grand prize.
While the long-running CBS competition has become known for blindsides, alliances and unforgettable reality TV moments, the Big Brother family has also endured heartbreaking loss.
Only three U.S. houseguests have died since appearing on the show since it premiered in July 2000.
The Big Brother fandom has experienced the tragic losses of Season 1 pioneer Cassandra Waldon, Season 2 fan favorite Kent Blackwelder and, most recently, Season 27 contestant Mickey Lee.
CBS has honored each of them, paying tribute to the contestants who helped shape the beloved franchise and left lasting impressions on fans and fellow houseguests alike.
MICKEY LEE
Mickey Lee appeared on Season 27 in 2025, quickly becoming one of the season’s most memorable personalities thanks to her bold gameplay, infectious energy and willingness to make big moves.
The Atlanta-based event curator finished 10th overall, becoming the eighth houseguest evicted and narrowly missing out on a coveted jury spot.
Just two months after the season wrapped, tragedy struck.
Mickey died on Christmas Day 2025 at the age of 35 after suffering multiple cardiac arrests linked to complications from the flu, according to her family.
Her loved ones described her as someone whose “authenticity, strength and spirit left a lasting impression” and her family thanked fans for their overwhelming support during her hospitalization.
When Big Brother returned for Season 28 in July 2026, CBS opened the premiere with a touching title card featuring Mickey’s smiling photo alongside the message: “In Loving Memory of Mickey Lee (1990–2025).”
Host Julie Chen Moonves also shared an emotional tribute on Instagram following the shocking death.
“Rest In Peace dear Mickey,” she wrote. “I will see you again on the other side in eternity,” while reflecting on a recent interview in which Lee had spoken about surviving significant health challenges earlier in life.
CASSANDRA WALDON
Long before live feeds and Power of Veto competitions became staples of the franchise, Cassandra Waldon made history as one of the original Big Brother houseguests during the show’s inaugural season in 2000.
The Tennessee native became a fan favorite for her warmth, intelligence and calm demeanor, ultimately finishing sixth after spending 69 days inside the house.
Nearly two decades later, Cassandra died in September 2019 following injuries sustained in a car accident. She was 56.
Her death prompted an outpouring of tributes from the Big Brother community, including longtime host Julie.
“Cassandra, you were the class act of Big Brother,” the host wrote on Instagram.
“You led with grace, humor and wisdom. Your light will continue to shine in all of those who were lucky enough to know you.”
Fans and former houseguests also remembered Cassandra as a trailblazer whose kindness helped set the tone for the franchise’s very first season.
KENT BLACKWELDER
Kent Blackwelder competed on Season 2 in 2001, the first installment of Big Brother to use the strategic format that continues today.
The former Navy veteran and business owner became one of the season’s most memorable personalities, particularly for his unlikely friendship with fellow houseguest Bunky Miller, which resonated with viewers throughout the summer.
Kent finished fourth, narrowly missing the finale after spending 82 days in the house.
He died on Christmas Eve 2017 after suffering a heart attack. He was 62.
