After weeks of courtroom drama, Weatherfield’s most reviled groomer has finally got what was coming to her. Megan Walsh was found guilty on both charges — and sentenced to five years in prison, with a requirement to serve at least two-thirds of her sentence.
It was a landmark moment for the Coronation Street grooming storyline, one that has gripped viewers since its debut. And now, actress Beth Nixon is speaking out for the first time about what it all meant — and whether Megan might one day return.
It Was Always Going to End This Way
Beth says that from her very first conversations with the Corrie team, one thing was clear: Megan was never going to escape justice.
“When I first took the role we didn’t know fully what was going to happen, how long it was going to be,” she explains. “But it was always that she wasn’t ever going to escape justice by being killed or anything like that. We always knew that she was going to serve her time.”
That deliberate choice — to show the full arc of a grooming case through to conviction — was central to the story’s purpose. Beth says the storyline was developed in close consultation with Barnardo’s, and was deliberately designed to mirror real-life cases of female abusers facing justice.
“It’s definitely important to show that, if you are being abused, then you can get justice,” she says. “It’s really hard because it doesn’t always happen that way. But there have been a few cases recently where female abusers have gone to trial and been sent down for about five or six years — which is about what Megan gets. So it’s mirroring real life in a positive way. Even though it’s obviously such a dark storyline, it’s just showing that it can happen.”
She Cried on Her Last Day
Despite playing one of the soap’s most despised recent villains, Beth says her time on Coronation Street was genuinely one of the highlights of her career.
“I loved it so much and I cried so much on my last day,” she admits. “It’s just such a fab place to work and I felt so blessed to have been given the storyline.”
Could Megan Return From Prison?
Here’s the twist fans will love: Beth hasn’t ruled out a comeback. And she already has a very specific idea for how it could play out.
“I’d love any opportunity to come back,” she says without hesitation. “I’d love Megan to bump into Lou Michaelis. Farrell [Hegarty, who plays Lou] is a really good friend, so I’d love to do some prison scenes with her. That would be fabulous. I think Lou would definitely put Megan in her place for sure!”
The idea of Megan and the formidable Lou Michaelis clashing in a prison setting is the kind of soapy gold that writes itself. Whether the Corrie writers are listening remains to be seen — but Beth Nixon is clearly ready when the call comes.
The Impact of Will’s Story
Beyond the drama and the villain’s downfall, Beth is proud of what the storyline achieved. The depiction of Will Driscoll’s journey through abuse, trial, and the messy aftermath of having a guilty verdict delivered has been unflinching and emotional.
“It’s quite nice, because it’s showing what all the family are going through — how they’re supporting Will and how it’s affecting them,” Beth reflects. “It shows the whole process of it.”
Megan Walsh may be behind bars now — but her story has left a mark on Weatherfield, and on the viewers who watched it all unfold.
