Since Survivor premiered in 2000, every castaway has chased the same dream: $1 million and the title of Sole Survivor. But the winner never sees the full amount. Federal and state taxes take a significant bite, and the final figure depends entirely on where the winner lives.

Don’t take those tax obligations lightly. Season 1 winner Richard Hatch famously spent nearly three years in federal prison for failing to pay his. He told PEOPLE in April 2023 that legal fees and lost work “more than wiped out the money.”

Why Is the Prize Still $1 Million in 2026?

As inflation has steadily climbed over the past two-plus decades, fans have repeatedly asked why the prize hasn’t kept pace. June Deery, professor of communication and media at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, explained it to The Hollywood Reporter: “The coveted commodity on most reality shows is not only the prize but the media exposure. Even if participants aren’t catapulted into A-list celebrityhood, the attention capital they accumulate on TV can be monetized online — from pitching sponsors or regular YouTube ads.”

The show did break its own rule once. Survivor: Winners at War — Season 40 in 2020 — doubled the jackpot to $2 million to celebrate 20 past winners competing in the same game. Tony Vlachos took it home. Season 50 also featured a $2 million prize, which Aubry Bracco won in dramatic fashion. For Season 51: The Open Era, the prize returns to the standard $1 million.

Second and Third Place: Not Bad Either

The runner-up walks away with $100,000, while the third-place finisher earns $85,000. Not the dream, but not nothing — especially after 26+ days in the wild.

Does Every Contestant Get Paid?

Yes — every player who steps foot in the game earns something. Former contestant Kaplan broke it down on the Trading Secrets podcast: the payout depends on placement and how many players are competing that season. “The same pot of money exists no matter how many players there are,” she said — meaning more castaways equals smaller individual payouts for those eliminated early.

Season 51: The Open Era features 20 new players — back to a tighter cast after Season 50’s record 24 contestants. “The first person voted out makes like $2,500,” Kaplan claimed, with incremental increases from there. Once players reach jury status, the jumps get serious — roughly $10,000 per placement above the last jury member.

“It works backwards,” she explained — each juror earns $10,000 less than the person who outlasted them, all the way up to the winner’s $1 million.
