Shocking Big Brother 27: Julie Chen Moonves admits the Hotel Mystère theme fell flat

Shocking Big Brother 27 talk is heating up after host Julie Chen Moonves finally admitted what many viewers had already suspected: the Hotel Mystère theme never fully delivered on its promise.

The season was billed as “a summer of mystery,” but for a lot of fans, the concept seemed to fade into the background far too quickly, leaving the show’s big idea feeling more like a missed opportunity than a true twist.

And yes, the return of BB13 champion Rachel Reilly caught plenty of people off guard. Even so, the spoiler had already raced across social media before Big Brother 27 officially got underway.

Then came the Mastermind, a shadowy figure meant to add suspense and drama. But as the season unfolded, the mystery behind the character barely seemed to move the needle, and the reveal that multiple people were involved only made the storyline feel even more scattered.

“I did feel slightly disappointed last season with Hotel Mystère,” Julie told Mike Bloom.

“There was this clock on the wall; maybe Rachel Reilly popped out of it. I thought there was going to be more of the evil Mastermind. I would bring that back if the Mastermind [were] a bigger presence. It was a little disappointing that he wasn’t in it enough. Like, where is he?! Where’s his lair? Get him out! Is he practicing to be Zingbot? That was a little disappointing to me. I wanted more of that. So, actually, I would bring that back to do more of it,” she explained.

Although Rachel has a loyal fan base, her inclusion in the BB27 cast sparked backlash from some viewers who argued that a returning houseguest could have an edge. Still, that advantage didn’t protect her from one of the season’s harshest moments. As fans remember, Rachel was sent home through the Hamster Wheel Maze rather than by a traditional vote, and that left many viewers furious.

Julie also weighed in on the White Locust twist, which forced the houseguests into the backyard for Tyler Crispen’s Hamster Wheel of Death Challenge.

“I loved White Locust!” Julie stated. “It wasn’t fair. Neither is life.”

“I mean, it had to show her fans she’s human,” she continued. “She was untouchable, and it showed you it’s a different game. She was the queen when she won. No one can take that away from her. But she didn’t know how to do that one competition. I mean, I get it. She’s a wife, she’s a mom. Our brains are wired a little bit differently. We’re also older. It’s a different game. It gets harder every year,” Julie added.
