Although breast cancer is overwhelmingly associated with women, men can also develop the disease. Male breast cancer accounts for fewer than one per cent of cases, with almost 500 men diagnosed in the UK each year.

Limited awareness can sometimes cause men to overlook symptoms or delay seeking medical help. Through Kit’s experience, Coronation Street hopes to encourage honest conversations and remind viewers that unusual changes to the chest should never be ignored.

The programme has worked closely with Macmillan Cancer Support and Breast Cancer Now to ensure Kit’s diagnosis, treatment and emotional response are portrayed sensitively and accurately.

Jacob Roberts, who plays Kit, admitted that he was initially unaware men could develop breast cancer.

“I genuinely didn’t know that men could get breast cancer,” the actor revealed, explaining why it felt appropriate for Kit to share that same lack of awareness.

Diagnosis sends shockwaves through Kit’s family

Kit’s condition will unfold alongside growing fears that Bernie, Gemma and other relatives could also be affected by an inherited BRCA gene mutation.

Producer Kate Brooks said the diagnosis would completely transform Kit’s world.

Charities praise the important storyline

Macmillan Cancer Support adviser Dany Bell said Kit’s feelings of shock and anxiety would be familiar to many people affected by cancer.

“We hope that this story will help show that nobody facing cancer in the UK has to struggle in silence,” he said. “We’re here for everyone affected by cancer, whoever or wherever they are.”

Breast Cancer Now has also welcomed the storyline for highlighting a disease many people still do not realise can affect men.

Sally Kum, the charity’s associate director of nursing and health information, described Kit’s journey as a powerful reminder that breast cancer can happen to anyone.

She hopes the storyline will encourage men to check their chests regularly and contact their GP if they discover anything new or unusual. While most changes will not be cancer, an early diagnosis can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment.

Kit’s stage 3 breast cancer storyline will begin airing on Coronation Street in September.
