Playing Betsy through all of this has been, by Sydney’s own account, one of the most demanding and rewarding things she’s done on the show. The physical research alone — understanding how a stroke affects movement, speech, cognition — required preparation she hadn’t done before for any other storyline.

But the emotional preparation went deeper. Sydney spoke to stroke survivors and to their families, listened to their stories, and tried to understand not just what the experience looks like from the outside but what it feels like from the inside: the fear, the confusion, the determination, and the grief for the version of yourself you were before.

That work, Sydney believes, is what viewers are responding to — and why the storyline, despite being difficult to watch, has connected as powerfully as it has.
