Although he is widely known professionally as Ned Porteous, the actor’s full birth name is Edward Graham Porteous.
Born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Ned developed an interest in acting at an early age. He studied at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts before continuing his training at the Guildford School of Acting.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting in 2015, Ned began building his career in television and theatre.
His first television appearance came shortly after graduation when he appeared in the BBC medical drama Holby City, where he played Rufus Lucas.
The role marked the beginning of his professional acting journey and opened the door to further opportunities in British television.
Ned Porteous’ Previous Soap Role Before Emmerdale

Before becoming Joe Tate, Ned was already familiar with the world of soap drama.
In 2016, he joined EastEnders as Mark Fowler Jr, the son of Michelle Fowler and Grant Mitchell.
The character’s arrival was a major moment for fans, as Mark Jr’s storyline involved one of the show’s long-running family secrets.
Mark Jr travelled from America to London in search of his biological father Grant, creating an emotional connection between two iconic soap families.
